In July of 1944, President Roosevelt summons his top commanders to a private meeting in Hawaii to determine the next phase in America's island-hopping campaign against Japan.  The debate, often contentious and discorded, was won by General Douglass MacArthur who convinces Roosevelt the Philippine Islands must be taken.  MacArthur has one controversial caveat - he feels it essential to first take Peleliu Island.  MacArthur feels the necessity to secure Peleliu's airfield from which the Japanese can launch attacks to menace his invasion of the Philippines.  Taking Peleliu would not be an easy task as the airfield is protected by over 10,000 battle-hardened troops of the Japanese 14th Division.  The island's horrific defenses are buried deep inside a nightmarish network of coral rock tunnels and cave systems. To make matters worse these systems are cloaked and hidden under a thick canopy of dense green jungle which prevents any detection by aerial reconnaissance.  Consequently, the attacking Marines will have no advanced intelligence on what's awaiting them in, what will turn out to be, one of the deadliest battles of the war in the Pacific. The First Marine Division knew going in the Japanese were a brutal, take-no-prisoner kind of enemy who would rather die than surrender.  If the Marines were going to be victorious they understood they would be forced to descend to the level of their enemy.  Ultimately, the Marines will lose man, after man, after man under heavy shell fire as they forge one of the deadliest battles of WWII against one of the most ferocious enemy we would face.  The blood and courage exhausted by this small band of heroes would ultimately break the back of the enemy, but it would come at a very steep price.  The 74 day battle would ultimately cost America the lives of over 10,000 of it finest young men whose futures would sadly never be written!

As a nation, we must never forget those who go off to war and risk their life, or sadly lose it, on the behalf of the greatest nation on Earth.  God Bless America's Veterans and America's Military Families for their Service and Sacrifice.
